SUSTAINABILITY
At CDS, being green is how we do business. For the past few years, CDS has produced custom artisanal concrete products using materials and production techniques that reflect our commitment to reducing the environmental impact of our craft. As architects and designers continue to focus on adaptable, durable green building materials, they are discovering that CDS offers limitless possibilities for incorporating artisanal concrete into green building projects.
Our philosophy about product design and production is simple. We are committed to producing the highest quality products and custom designs in a way that maximizes creativity and minimizes impact to the environment and our workers. We support using local materials, environmentally friendly production processes, and support the economic fabric of our local community. We believe that a sustainable business is the foundation for creating great products.
Our Products
CDS Concrete produces custom and standard line products that rely on local and recycled materials for their beauty, strength and durability. CDS concrete is 100 percent recyclable and comprised of recycled materials. Precast concrete can enhance the sustainability of any project as the raw materials are procured locally and the thermal mass properties require less energy consumption to heat or cool a space. CDS replaces up to 50 percent of our aggregate with recycled glass. Concrete is inherently local made up of regionally extracted minerals, aggregate and cement. The addition of fly ash, silica fume, and/or recycled glass, metal or stone aggregate makes our products stronger, increases its overall recycled content, and offers an endless array of colors and finishes. Your creativity is our inspiration.
Our Processes
CDS Concrete is produced in a new state-of-the-art facility 40 miles West of New York City. Many of the materials used in the production of Concrete products come from within 90 miles of the plant. CDS is dedicated to sustainable business and manufacturing practices and recycles waste material from the coal and metal industries to create a high- performance cement substitute, saving an estimated 10 tons of cement annually. This substitute increases the overall compressive strength of our concrete and reuses products that would otherwise go to landfills. Specially formulated concrete mixes are prepared in batches to insure quality and uniformity, and the cast in reusable resin moulds. After a period of days in a controlled curing environment, the concrete products are ready for custom finishing. The finishing process is water intensive, and CDS has installed a sophisticated system that captures and recycles all of process water it uses. This closed loop system filters sediment from the finishing process which is captured and reused in other products and re-circulates filtered water back into the finishing process.
Great attention is paid to the stains and sealers we use on our products to insure that they are durable and safe. We pay attention to Volatile Organic Chemicals (VOCs) and use finishes that are friendly to the environment and healthy for our workers to handle. The care and attention we lavish on every product we produce never compromises the health or well-being of our talented staff.
For design professionals who are familiar with LEED, our products offer multiple opportunities to contribute towards certification. For designers new to green building and the LEED Rating System, here are some highlights of the products we produce:
All our products are produced using mostly regional materials in our plant in Rockaway New JerseyMany of our products contain recycled content materials, including fly ash, silica fume, recycled glass, metal and/or stone aggregate
- Our finishes include stains and sealers that are durable and comply with LEED requirements for low-emitting materials.
- All of our products can be recycled in the future into new materials and uses.
